WIND TOWER MOVED FROM OAKDALE TO SCATTERGOOD (Wind Energy Page)
A 100' wind data collection tower was moved from the Oakdale Campus to Scattergood School near West Branch on Thursday, November 16, 2006. Placement of the tower is part of the University's continuing exploratory efforts to determine if a locally installed wind turbine will become part of our renewable energy portfolio. Several Power Plant staff helped to take down the tower, transport and re-erect it near the soccer field at Scattergood. These included Tom Vine, Bob Selby, Rick Hackert, Bill Dusenbury, Joe Schwarzhoff, Bob Harding and Dave Jackson. The staff assisted Don Laughlin and Jerry Marsh of West Branch. The tower move fits into a plan to place anemometers at Scattergood and the Hills Observatory site to measure wind conditions for approximately one year. This will help the University to determine which site has the greatest wind conditions, and whether erecting a wind turbine would be a good business decision for the University. Facilities Management plans to connect the data from both sites to a live web site for side-by-side viewing of wind conditions at both sites. (See Live Wind Measurements)
The Scattergood school administration is excited about hosting the tower, and would also like to determine whether generating on-site electricity from wind energy may be a part of its own future. Partnering on the data tower gives both organizations an opportunity to learn together and create future plans. The tower is being loaned to the schools by Cornell College in Mt. Vernon.
