Course 56:155 Wind Power Management (05/08)
Four engineering students enrolled in 56:155 Wind Power Management,
Kevin Langan
Robbie Lovstuen,
Dan Rogge and Matt Zanker,
built a small wind turbine (rated power 750W) to meet the semester project requirements for the wind energy class (30% of the class grade).
In designing the turbine, the students followed the life cycle engineering principles introduced in the class. Many turbine components have been manufactured from used materials, and some assemblies, e.g., the turbine generator, was designed for reuse. (note: the US is not currently manufacturing generators for any of the utility-scale wind turbines, including the GE turbines, installed across the country.)
The cost of the prototype is amazingly low, $354. The turbine produces energy and can be viewed in 3221 Seamans Center. The class will be making use of the turbine and hope to pilot test it. More information will forthcoming.

Student Initiatives
Energy conservation on the UI campus begins with engaging the UI community, particularly students. Students are actively involved in developing energy conservation initiatives and work with faculty and staff in an interdisciplinary setting to achieve their goals.

Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Connects with Energy Conservation
Several of the fraternity members have worked on energy conservation and recycling initiatives. The fraternity changed out its dining hall from high wattage incandescent lights to low energy compact fluorescent lamps (CFL's.) during their Kick-off Picnic on Sunday, August 18, 2007.
Facilities Management has been actively engaging student participation in its strategic initiatives, including hiring student employees in operational units, and on key committees such as the Campus Planning Committee, Energy Conservation Advisory Council, UI Recycling Task Force, UI Energy Expo and research and development projects in Utilities and Energy Management.
