Student Energy Audits

Students, faculty and staff working on the student energy challenge attended an energy audit train-the-trainer session on January 9, 2007, presented by MidAmerican Energy and Facilities Management staff member Janet Razbadouski. Eleven students representing five student groups on campus learned how to conduct energy audits in spaces on campus, currently focusing on Residence Halls living spaces. Faculty from UI College of Engineering, University of Northern Iowa and Kirkwood Community College attended this training to show support for the students and to recognize their efforts. Beginning with the spring semester, UI students will train other students and additionally conduct energy audits in living spaces on and off-campus. During the audits, students will identify areas for energy conservation, and discuss behavioral changes with their peers. An audit kit will be left at each location visited. Each kit includes tips for energy saving, an energy calculator, self-audit guide, a compact flourescent lamp and a "Save Some Green" writstband. The students are working on several projects to promote energy conservation on campus, including a Residence Hall Challenge, monthly theme programs, and special activities. Facilities Management staff and the students have partnered with UI's external electricity providers Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy to explore new ideas to promote energy conservation efforts to the campus community.
