The University of Iowa Energy Conservation Advisory Council (ECAC), created in 2004, promoted changes in energy use, energy efficiency, green power, and environmental consciousness at the UI. The collective efforts of all who have been associated with the ECAC contributed to a long list of accomplishments that ranged from an awareness campaign and Energy Expo to the Energy Conservation and Management Plan and its related operational policies.

The ECAC was disbanded in 2009 after playing a central role in the development of University energy policies and practices that laid the foundation for the establishment of the Office of Sustainability.  The Office of Sustainability coordinates and develops programs to promote sustainability and resource conservation; coordinates efforts to formulate institutional goals, policies, practices and measure progress; seeks grants and other funding to financially support campus sustainability efforts; and works to enhance and enlarge the UI community's understanding of the importance and feasibility of sustainability initiatives from an ecological and financial perspective.
