UI Power Plant - Oat Hull Project Take a front row seat as cameras go inside the UI Power Plant for an up close view of the innovative and award-winning Biomass Fuel Project. The University uses a biomass material, oat hulls, produced by the Cedar Rapids, IA Quaker Oats facility and burns this by-product to generate steam for use on the Main Campus and approximately 10 million kilowatt-hours of green power.  The biomass fuel represents 20% of the fuel (coal, natural gas, and biomass) consumed in UI’s Main Power Plant.

UI announces strengthened commitment to sustainability and joins AASHE, on Tuesday, April 22, President Mason announced a strengthened emphasis on sustainability in the UI's use of energy and materials and in its academic focus, creating five new faculty positions, a new sustainability office, and campus committees to monitor the UI's sustainability practices and policies. The UI also joined AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Earth Week recycling recognition and celebration, The UI celebrated and recognized campus recycling efforts during Earth Week, April 21-25.

UI Building Coordinators seeing green, Performing Arts wanted to find ways to make the division more “green” and asked, "How can we save energy?" Facilities Management had answers.

Students conduct lighting audit,
As part of a class project, two students conducted a lighting audit in Jessup Hall under the supervision of Facilities Management staff.

UI helps Michigan State go green,
The UI will sell Michigan State University 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide credits to help MSU meet its first-year membership commitment to the chicago Climate Exchange.

UI partners with EPA to use and produce green power, The UI recently became a Green Power Partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The UI is meeting a green power commitment to the EPA by burning oat hulls in place of coal, generating approximately 10 million kilowatt-hours of green power.

Oakdale Renewable Energy Plant
Under consideration is constructing and operating an energy plant at the Oakdale Campus using alternative and renewable energy sources such as biomass, landfill gas, anaerobic digester methane, and gasifier syngas.
