The University of Iowa is an emerging leader in renewable energy strategies and sustainability practices. From renewable fuels to wind power and sustainable design, Iowa is pioneering the way in current efforts toward an energy-independent future. Video Feature UI announces strengthened commitment to sustainability and joins AASHE, on Tuesday, April 22, President Mason announced a strengthened emphasis on sustainability in the UI's use of energy and materials and in its academic focus, creating five new faculty positions, a new sustainability office, and campus committees to monitor the UI's sustainability practices and policies. The UI also joined AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. UI Building Coordinators seeing green, Performing Arts wanted to find ways to make the division more “green” and asked, "How can we save energy?" Facilities Management had answers. UI partners with EPA to use and produce green power, The UI recently became a Green Power Partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The UI is meeting a green power commitment to the EPA by burning oat hulls in place of coal, generating approximately 10 million kilowatt-hours of green power.
